Live chat with Jimmy Lai this Thursday (蘋果日報 Apple Daily)
Next Digital founder Jimmy Lai will continue to go live this Thursday (Sep. 3) on Twitter to discuss Hong Kong’s political situation and future with netizens. Last week, Lai wore black to protest against the police’s rewriting of the history of the 7.21 incident. Together with guest host Mark Clifford, former editor-in-chief of South China Morning Post, Lai discussed how the police handled 7.21 with Victoria Tin-bor Hui, political science professor at the University of Notre Dame. They talked about how the arrest of injured lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, and the other 15 people reflected how the national security law has destroyed the rule of law and confounded black and white. The once-great image of the Hong Kong Police Force is now disfigured. Police no longer care, and are even altering facts. In the latter half of the live discussion, Lai was joined by “We the Hongkongers” convener Frances Hui, who initiated the activity to strengthen and promote the identity of Hongkongers in the U.S. through the census. She mentioned the pressure faced by journalists in reporting the truth, and the future of the media. Lai said that journalists are more “cautious” now than before in their reporting, reflecting that there is no real freedom anymore; but in times of crisis, journalism has even greater importance and significance. At 9 a.m. on Thursday HKT (9 p.m. on Wednesday EST), Lai will go live again with Clifford continuing on as the guest host, and will be joined by Raymond Burghardt, former chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). Well-versed in U.S.-Taiwan relations, as well as the situation in Hong Kong, Burghardt had expressed his views on LegCo pan-democratic lawmakers’ strategies when he participated in Lai’s Twitter live previously.
